Switzerland does not use the term ‘work permit’ in its traditional sense. The permit is a combination
of both residence and work permits, entitling the holder to live in a particular Canton and work for a
specified employer. Swiss law provides for a number of entry permits.
Permit L
(short-term residency)
Short-term residents are foreign nationals, who reside in Switzerland for a limited
period of time, usually less than a year, for a certain purpose, as a rule, with gainful employment.
Foreign nationals may obtain this permit provided that they are in possession of an employment contract
valid from three up to twelve months. |
Permit B (resident foreign nationals)
Resident
foreign nationals are foreign nationals who reside in Switzerland for one year or longer period of time,
for a certain purpose, with or without gainful employment.
Swiss B Permits are normally issued to employees of Swiss companies (and their family members) and
students at all levels. In such cases, B Permits are valid for one year and is regularly extended.

Permit C (settled foreign nationals)
Settled
foreign nationals are foreign nationals, who have been granted a settlement permit after ten years’ residence
in Switzerland on a B Permit (or 5 years for citizens of EU/EFTA member countries).
This permit grants the holder the broadest rights, which are more or less equal to those of citizens of the country:
the free choice of work and place of residence in Switzerland, the option to receive social assistance and pension,
etc. |
